Grizzly bear watching in British Columbia. A kayak tour to Orford Bay a grizzly bear sanctuary in Bute Inlet.

Orford River Grizzly Bear Expedition

Join one of our rare and exciting grizzly bear kayak tours to the Orford River drainage in one of the most spectacular fjords in the world: Bute Inlet. Each autumn grizzly bears congregate in this British Columbia river estuary to feed on spawning salmon making visual contact a high likelihood.

Orford River Bear_1_lrThis is this an amazing grizzly bear watching and British Columbia sea kayaking adventure, an unforgettable wildlife tour in Canada: an opportunity to view grizzly bears in their natural setting. Our BC kayak tours begin at Quadra Island (near Campbell River on Vancouver Island, British Columbia) with kayaking practice, trip preparations, safety protocols and first night at Discovery Islands Lodge, our comfortable wilderness lodge accommodation.

Our sea kayaking journey begins by paddling through the Discovery Islands outer archipelago towards the dramatic skyline of Bute Inlet, a magnificent fjord located in the midst of British Columbia’s highest mountains. After 4 days paddling, kayaking in the fjord and camping in the wild, we’ll arrive near the Orford Bay estuary. From our beach camp, we’ll board a power boat and join a Xwemalkwu First Nations tour where we observe bears from from the land which include opportunities to watch grizzly bears from platform-blinds. On average, we observe around 12 grizzly bears per trip. If weather conditions allow, we will try to enter the estuary to observe grizzlies from our kayaks.

Our Coast Mountain Expeditions’ boat, Chico Mendes, will meet us in the inlet and return us to Discovery Islands Lodge on Quadra Island for our final evening together… another scrumptious dinner, more tall tales, and one last sleep in the backcountry.
