Surge Narrows Marine Park Kayak Day Trips
Sea kayak day trips exploring marine life and wild nature near Quadra Island in British Columbia, Canada.
Get a little further out on a Quadra Island kayak day tour! In the heart of British Columbia’s outer Discovery Islands, our kayak day trips offer a great opportunity to learn the basics of sea kayaking while exploring the natural beauty of a remote BC marine park and an area rich with cultural history.
Our kayak day trips begin at Discovery Islands Lodge near the end of Surge Narrows Road on northern Quadra Island — a beautiful 30-minute rainforest drive from the island community of Heriot Bay BC. By basing our tours from northern Quadra Island, we explore an area that is quieter and less populated than other day tour locations.
Following a comprehensive kayaking skills and safety lesson, we’ll begin our Quadra Island kayak adventure journeying through the calm channels between Quadra Island, Maurelle Island and Read Island in British Columbia’s Discovery Archipelago. With towering mountains as a backdrop, our kayaking path meanders along forested shores and past remote island homesteads around the tiny west coast community of Surge Narrows.
We’ll explore the Settlers Pass area where steamships used to provide regular service in a pioneer era and wonder at the much older native pictograph on a rocky outcrop in the pass. In our sea kayaks we’ll navigate through the small islets and tidal back-eddies of Surge Narrows Marine Park. Kayaking in the shallow waters of the tidal passage, we’ll have great opportunities to view the wonderful diversity of colourful marine life for which the area is famous.
Given the abundance of wildlife, you’re sure to see many shore and sea birds and likely to spy a host of seals and other wild creatures. There’s a chance that dolphins, porpoise, and if we’re very lucky whales will join us on our kayaking route. We’ll take breaks to explore points of interest, enjoy a little beachcombing and savour the ambience of the area. Mid-day we will pull out on a delightful beach to enjoy a delicious & wholesome lunch.
Throughout the route, our knowledgeable kayak guides will enhance your experience with colourful stories about local history, ecology, and island life. All of our kayak guides are certified by the Sea Kayak Guides Alliance of BC, and are experienced and thoroughly familiar with the area. You can expect to learn a lot, and feel safe, secure and well looked-after!
Our guided kayak day trips are not difficult, and suitable for nearly everybody. Families are welcome, and our guides are also happy to add extra challenge and skill building opportunities for more experienced paddlers.
