Bute Inlet Expedition

Sea kayak tour in the drama of BC's highest peaks at the southern boundary of the Great Bear Rainforest.

The Bute Inlet Expedition is a high energy paddling trip to an immense and dramatically

magnificent geological feature of British Columbia's Coast Mountains. Three thousand metre peaks rise from the glacial turquoise water of the inlet which is home to healthy and abundant wildlife. Bute Inlet also forms a southern boundary of the Great Bear Rainforest, a large conservancy area established to protect the temperate rainforest ecoregion unique to the Pacific Northwest coast.

We begin with a boat from Quadra Island to Coast Mountain Lodge for a first afternoon/evening that includes kayak and safety skills practice, a short excursion, special dinner and overnight at the lodge.

Our route to Bute Inlet is a paddle path north towards the Coast Mountains towering on the horizon. Our kayaking journey along forested shores is punctuated by islets and some channel crossings and tidal passages where we’ll  be on the lookout for marine mammals, sea birds, and other wildlife. Wilderness beach camp sites, breathtaking vistas and good wholesome meals round out each day of paddling.

Surrounded by tremendous mountains, Bute Inlet is a rugged place where humans feel small. The glacier-carved shorelines are wildly beautiful, and our camps are located to maximize the experience. On our last paddling day we rendezvous with Coast Mountain’s boat, the Chico Mendes and return to our homestead lodge for a final evening of outer islands hospitality. We return you to the busy world about noon on the last day.

• Day 1: kayak skills instruction & practice

• 4-5 paddling days; 3-4 nights kayak camping
• 2 lodge nights (first & final) accommodation at Coast Mountain Lodge

• Maximum 10 participants with 2 kayak guides

About this Kayak Trip
• Moderate to Strenuous: for healthy energetic people with a good sense of adventure!
• Paddling: 4 to 6 hours of kayaking per day
• Single and double kayaks
• Average distance: 9-18 km (6-12 mi) per day
• Sea conditions: mostly sheltered but the inlet is subject to inflow (anabatic) winds.
• Beaches: low sloping sandy gravel or medium boulders; may be slippery when wet.
• Weather conditions: usually sunny, sometimes hot. Extended rain unlikely, but possible • Temperature: 12-30 C (50-85 F). Water 8-15 (50-60 F), colder in the inlet.
